Tomorrow, I will have had my flip phone for one month.
For a couple of years, I had thought a lot about buying a flip phone but I had all the normal excuses that everyone has in the back of my mind:
-No GPS
-No marco poloing my friends (video messaging app I use daily)
-Group chats are iffy
-Bad camera (I LOVE taking photos and videos to look back on)
-No internet
Several things accumulated to me switching over to a flip phone.
-I deleted social media on November 9th, 2026.
-I began to write for LOG OFF Movement , which put me around other people who were talking and writing about being offline.
-I read an article by a fellow writer – https://substack.com/@logoffmovement/note/p-199263850?utm_source=notes-share-action&r=3o5s9p
-I read a LinkedIn post by Nathan Covey – https://www.linkedin.com/posts/nathan-covey_turning-27-today-and-got-myself-a-flip-phone-share-7455696876210839552-M67C/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop&rcm=ACoAAEA01LQBS1geLcRBOXL5MtKbOb55arOAn4M
All of this was accumulating and when I read that last post by Nathan Covey, I knew that I had to make the switch.
I am almost one month in and here to give you pros and cons.
Pros:
-The phone I have (Sunbeam brand) HAS VOICE TO TEXT. Flip phones don’t get much better than that.
-Sunbeam phone also receives and can send voice messages. This is huge for me, because I voice message all the time.
-I’ve literally READ 4 books since getting this flip phone. Not listened to – READ. I haven’t read that many books in a month’s time in years.
-My sunbeam flip phone has weather radar which I love.
-Has bluetooth (you can send songs and photos to the phone)
-WAY less distracted while driving.
Cons (and solutions to the cons):
-No google maps – I have a GPS that works great.
-Limited on group chats – I just use groupme on my computer.
-I marco polo people a lot (video messaging app) but I have been able to just keep my old phone and I go on it once a day to check it. Works great.
-Flip phone has a hard time receiving videos.
-Won’t open internet (some sunbeam flip phones will when a link is sent – mine is just a simplified version.)
-Camera is awful – BUT I now just carry a small camera with me and I’ve found that I am much more intentional with the photos that I take.
I carry a purse with me EVERYWHERE now. I never forget my wallet or anything because I always keep my phone, camera and a book (game changer for reading) in the purse.
I have become so much more present while talking to people. Moments where I feel so bored, I have to make myself sit in those moments or read my book that I have. It’s amazing how much reading you get done when you are just waiting in line and you can’t scroll.
The amount of people who will come up to you and comment on you having a flip phone “and how I should switch” is also incredible.
If you have any questions, let me know. 🙂 Would love to help you out. It has been such a game changer for me and while there have been some annoying things, it’s been such a good switch. THANK YOU to each person who inspired me so much and pushed me to make the switch.
