I’ve being spoiling my joy

It seems to me that the things which we pray and dream the most for, are the things that we often overlook once we obtain them.

Recently, I have come to see how entirely ungrateful people are for all the beautiful things in their lives. Or, instead of being ungrateful, they remain totally unaware of the beauty in their lives.

Why is it that I remain entirely entranced by a baby sitting across from me but the mother seems to find me silly for staring? It’s as if she can’t see the beauty sitting in her own lap that I see so vividly.

Why is it that when I compliment a woman about her beautiful hair, she blushes and tells me that I most be joking?

I’ve caught myself acting this way, too. I go on a splendid trip with my husband. We splash in the ocean, lay in the sun, see ancient historical grounds and eat the most delicious food. And partway through the day, through the glorious day, I begin planning the next time that we can do it all over.

Why can’t I just sit in the moment and enjoy it? How often have I spoiled my present joy because I wanted to focus on future joy?

Future joy may never come. We don’t know when our last day will be. All that we can do is be present today and enjoy all that we have today.

Take a moment to open your eyes to the beauty that is around you. The home that you’ve prayed for. The baby that sleeps on your chest. The job that you’ve worked so hard for. The family that loves you so well. The friend that checks up on you. You have so much beauty in your life. Cherish it and be grateful for it. Sit in it.
I know that this is something that I will be working on in myself.

Great Point Keziah. It’s super hard to stay in the moment and not focus on planning for the future, or having regrets for the past. Great post!
